KUCHING, Feb 11: Individuals found guilty of throwing waste in public places can be compounded by the local council under the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-laws, 1999, says Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

He said offenders would be penalised with a fine of RM1,000 for the first offence and, in the case of a second or subsequent offence, offenders would be subjected to a further fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment for six months or both.

Lately, several public areas in Kuching South, including undeveloped private lands, are littered with heaps of waste.

Wee said the council has investigated and suspected the offenders to be the same group of individuals.

“Even after we cleared the rubbish and put up a notice, they continue to throw their rubbish at the same spots.

“So, we are planning to install some CCTVs (closed-circuit televisions) to monitor the hotspots,” he said during his weekly ShallWEETalk Facebook live session today.

For those who require bulk waste collection, Wee said they can always contact Trienekens for their services. — DayakDaily
