KUCHING, March 12: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is actively seeking funding to implement drainage improvement works at Lorong Sungai Apong following recurring flooding in the area.
MBKS Mayor Wee Hong Seng emphasised this after identifying several infrastructure issues during a recent walkabout.
During the visit at Lorong Sungai Apong, in front of the Sungai Apong Basketball Court (SABA), Wee observed that drainage water had overflowed onto the road, creating unsafe conditions for residents and road users.

After speaking with nearby residents, he noted that the existing culvert in the area is overfilled, preventing smooth water flow into the river.
“As a result, heavy rain and high water discharge from upstream drains cause the road and surrounding areas to flood.
“The situation has caused inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians, particularly school children who regularly use the route. The flooding not only disrupts traffic but also increases safety risks for those passing through the area,” he said in a statement today.
In addition to the drainage problem, Wee also identified several potholes along the front section of the road leading towards Kampung Sungai Apong.
Following the inspection, he instructed the MBKS Engineering team to carry out immediate repair works.
“The potholes along the affected stretch have since been filled to improve road safety while the council explores longer-term solutions to address the drainage issue,” he said.
MBKS, he affirmed, remains committed to ensuring safe and well-maintained infrastructure for the community. — DayakDaily
