KUCHING, March 27: Immediate rodding works have been carried out at Jalan Pecky to remove debris and waste that were blocking the roadside drain, while the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) works to secure funding for upgrading the aged and damaged drainage infrastructure.
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng led a second site visit to Jalan Pecky today, accompanied by councillors, senior officers, and the drain maintenance contractor, to oversee direct action on the clogged drain that has been affecting residents in the area.
The follow-up visit underlines MBKS’ firm commitment to addressing the problem comprehensively, combining immediate mitigation measures with a long-term solution.
In a statement, Wee said a joint inspection revealed that the primary cause of the blockage is the collapse of the drain structure beneath a house entrance crossover.
“The deteriorated drain wall has formed cavities that trap debris such as plastic containers, pails, and accumulated leaves, obstructing water flow and preventing proper stormwater discharge.
“Immediate rodding works have been carried out at the affected sections to restore flow and reduce the risk of water stagnation. MBKS has directed that these temporary measures continue to ensure the situation remains under control,” he said.
However, MBKS is not relying solely on temporary fixes. Wee has instructed that a comprehensive long-term solution be expedited, including the full restoration and upgrading of the damaged drainage system.
Efforts are underway to secure the necessary allocation and approvals so that permanent rectification works can proceed without delay.
“This is already my second visit to the site because I want to ensure that this issue is not just managed, but properly resolved. Temporary measures are necessary to provide immediate relief, but our priority is a permanent solution that addresses the root cause.
“MBKS will continue to monitor closely and push for the necessary works to be carried out without delay. At the same time, we urge the public to play their part in keeping drains clear by avoiding the disposal of waste into the drainage system, as this contributes to recurring blockages,” he urged.
MBKS will continue close monitoring of the site and ensure all necessary actions are taken promptly to protect public safety, maintain environmental standards, and improve overall drainage performance in the area. — DayakDaily
