MBKS, police to intensify crackdown on covert gambling operations in stores, coffeeshops

KUCHING, Aug 12: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the Royal Malaysia Police will intensify cooperation, including joint enforcement operations, to combat illegal online gambling activities allegedly operating discreetly within convenience stores and coffeeshops.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng disclosed this after receiving a courtesy visit from Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, deputy Supt Merbin Lisa, District Criminal Investigation officer DSP Mohd Hafizi Ishak, District Special Branch officer DSP Amir Ali, and officer-in-charge of Padungan Police Station Insp Goh Chen Hong at the MBKS Headquarters today.

The meeting underscored both parties’ commitment to safeguarding the safety and well-being of Kuching residents, with discussions focusing on enhancing joint efforts to curb illegal online gambling.

“Both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration through coordinated enforcement, regular data sharing, and continuous intelligence exchange,” Wee said in a statement today.

Other public safety concerns were also raised, including the presence of vagrants and mentally ill homeless individuals in public areas.

Wee stressed MBKS’s readiness to work alongside the police, the Welfare Department, and the Sarawak Health Department to develop a coordinated and sustainable approach to address these challenges.

He also expressed appreciation to Alexson and his officers for their proactive stance, reaffirming MBKS’s full support for collaborative initiatives to maintain public safety, order, and quality of life in Kuching. — DayakDaily
