KUCHING, Dec 13: Plans are underway for the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to collaborate with the health department to list calorie information on food items at local eateries, giving customers clearer guidance on their daily intake.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the initiative formed part of the council’s long-term effort to promote healthier eating habits and support a more health-conscious urban community.
“We approached the health department to see whether they could help determine the calorie content for the food sold here. One bowl of kolo mee—how many calories? Then you know how much you need to burn. This is long-term planning.
“We emphasise moving towards a smart city, but a smart city needs healthy people. And that starts with the food available in our markets,” he said when visiting Kenyalang Park Market here today.
Wee said the council wanted the market to be a place that is not only comfortable and affordable but also supportive of healthier dietary choices for families.
He encouraged more residents to visit the market, noting that many hawkers had served the community for more than 30 years while younger traders were introducing new fusion-style dishes.
“Give them a chance. You will find good food at very reasonable prices. Those who have been working or serving food here for over 30 years have vast experience—I’m sure the food will not go wrong,” he said.
Wee added that MBKS staff and councillors had intensified on-ground engagement to ensure feedback and complaints were channelled correctly and addressed in stages.
“We want to be visible on the ground. Improvements take time because every upgrade requires funding, planning and consultancy work,” he said.
To strengthen public participation, MBKS would soon distribute a questionnaire along with a QR code option for those who preferred to submit feedback digitally.
“We hope the public will be generous with their comments. Building the city we want requires everyone’s input, and we are open to all,” Wee assured. — DayakDaily
