KUCHING, March 25: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has urged the public to remain vigilant against fire hazards and practise road safety during the festive season, as Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaches.
Speaking to reporters at the ‘Program Ihsan Ramadan MBKS Bersama Komuniti 2025’ held today at the MBKS Community Hall here, Wee shared that three fire incidents have already been reported within the MBKS jurisdiction.
“I think there have already been three fire incidents in the MBKS area — and that’s something we really don’t want to see happening.
“Of course, we’re also looking into other measures to see how we can prevent such incidents,” he said.
Wee was representing Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the programme.
The mayor further reminded the public—especially those baking in preparation for the holidays—to remain vigilant and take necessary fire prevention measures.
He also advised motorists to drive safely when returning to their hometowns, stressing that arriving safely is more important than rushing.
“Don’t rush for another hour or even half an hour. You will get there,” he said, noting the importance of safeguarding families while on the road.
Wee noted an increase in turnout at this year’s Ihsan Ramadan event, with around 600 attendees compared to 500 the previous year, attributing it to Sarawak’s spirit of unity across races and religions.
“This is what Sarawak is about—we celebrate all festivals together. It’s a good reflection of our unity,” he said, adding that contributions from sponsors also helped provide gifts and tokens for children.
He encouraged the public to continue fostering Sarawak’s culture of mutual respect and multicultural celebration by visiting one another during festive seasons.
“Next will be Gawai, and this is how Sarawakians are different—we support one another and celebrate together,” he said, while also calling for continued public support for stable governance to sustain peace and harmony.
Meanwhile, a press handout stated that a total of 200 asnaf children from 15 villages within the MBKS jurisdiction received Ramadan assistance amounting to RM150 each.
In addition, 20 mosques and suraus received financial aid of RM700 each, along with two rolls of prayer mats, two pairs of telekung, and four copies of the Tafsir Al-Quran.
The programme aims to ease the burden of the less fortunate and foster a spirit of unity and compassion within the community.
The ‘Program Ihsan Ramadan MBKS Bersama Komuniti 2025’ exemplifies MBKS’s ongoing commitment to community welfare and inter-agency collaboration, particularly during significant cultural and religious occasions.
It also serves as a reminder of the power of compassion, unity, and generosity in strengthening the social fabric of the city. — DayakDaily
