KUCHING, June 10: Regardless of students’ financial backgrounds, be they billionaires’ children who come to school in posh cars or poor ones who walk to school, they should all be assigned the duty of cleaning school toilets.
This is the view of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who said during his schooling days, students cleaned school toilets.
“During that time, students were rostered for all types of duties, including sweeping, blackboard cleaning, toilet cleaning, etc. Â
“I can’t understand why today’s students can’t do it. Only after the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) gave the directive did the Education Ministry start to do so.
“Actually, it should not have waited until the Prime Minister said so. It should have been done long ago,” said Wee during the 167th ShallWeeTalk live stream today.
Wee believes that the duty of toilet cleaning in schools may inculcate a sense of responsibility in students. It is also effective in character building. Â
Admitting that in this high-technology era, students do not have to go to school to receive an education. Â
However, he is adamant that for students who are still heading to school every day, their parents should allow them to take up toilet cleaning duty. Â
“Or would these parents rather let their children play online games?” Wee asked. — DayakDaily
