KUCHING, Jan 4: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng clarified that the Padungan White Cat’s attire, which sparked controversy, was not intended to be insensitive.
The cat was dressed in Chinese New Year-themed clothing before Christmas ended in preparation for the shooting of a Lunar New Year music video.
Wee explained that the video, centered on Padungan, aims to showcase and promote the culture and heritage of one of Kuching’s oldest areas. Other initiatives include featuring Kenyalang Park on red packets (ang pao) to be distributed to the public.
“The attire change was made to align with the filming schedule of the music video, which was launched on Jan 2. This was our intention, and I leave it to the people to accept or not,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk live session today.
He emphasised that the change in attire is symbolic of the upcoming festivities, with plans for Aidilfitri-themed clothing soon.
“Most importantly, it reflects our respect for every festival celebrated in Sarawak’s diverse community,” he added.
Wee also addressed concerns about the catās appearance, particularly its fierce-looking eyes. After receiving feedback, MBKS staff were instructed to touch up the cat’s paint, as its coat had worn off and appeared dirty.
While painting, they inadvertently made the eyes look fiercer, especially in photos. The Mayor had previously spoken to artist Gerald Goh about giving the cat a friendlier, livelier look, but due to rainy weather, Goh was unable to complete the task.
Wee noted that decorations in Kuching, especially in commercial areas, are frequently updated in anticipation of different celebrations, even before the 12 days of Christmas had concluded.
“Even the music has shifted to Chinese New Year tunes,” he said.
Despite the controversy, Wee emphasised the importance of public feedback, welcoming constructive criticism as it reflects the community’s spirit and their desire for a better city.
“We are open to listening and improving based on the community’s needs. We will not make excuses and are always willing to answer any questions.
“However, I hope that external negativity targeting Sarawak does not undermine our unity and harmony. Let us remain proud of and defend our unity in Sarawak, without allowing negativity to divide us,” he reminded. ā DayakDaily
