KUCHING, Feb 26: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng hopes the organiser of the Citrawarna Keluarga Malaysia 2022 event will look into the issue of overcrowding at Kuching Waterfront.

Since last night, photos depicting the Darul Hana Bridge cramped with people without proper social distancing have gone viral.

Netizens have since then shown great concern about the enforcement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) at the venue.

When queried about the incident during his 100th Facebook live session, Wee first clarified that Kuching Waterfront is not under the jurisdiction of MBKS but the North City Commission Council (DBKU).

Denying his participation in the organisation of the federal event, he opined that the organiser should investigate and ensure all SOPs agreed and approved by Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) be complied with at all times.

“From what I understand, the waterfront event is a federal event related to tourism. According to the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Dato Sri Nancy Shukri), everything will follow the SOPs.

“There are seven large canopies set up, and each canopy can accommodate a maximum of 250 individuals, so there should only be about 2,000 people there. I’m not sure about the other details,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wee was also concerned about public safety as the bridge had to carry the weight of such a large crowd. — DayakDaily
