KUCHING, July 24: Sarawak needs elected representatives who contribute ideas, negotiate firmly for the State’s interests and deliver tangible results instead of politicians who simply oppose every initiative, says Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
Speaking at the opening of the Kuching Festival Fair 2026 tonight, Wee said genuine progress is achieved through hard work, sound policies and constructive engagement rather than constant fault-finding.
“Progress does not happen by constantly looking for faults.
“Progress comes from rolling up our sleeves, sitting at the negotiating table, defending Sarawak’s interests with facts and preparation, and ultimately producing results,” he said.
Without naming anyone, Wee said there are still those who believe being in the opposition means opposing everything.
“Every initiative is criticised. Every achievement is questioned. Every success is dismissed. Even MBKS, despite the work and improvements we have delivered, remains a constant target of criticism from the state opposition,” he said.
However, he stressed that criticism should be measured against facts.
Wee said MBKS has recorded the lowest corruption risk rating and received a five-star rating from the Federal Ministry for its management despite having a relatively small management team.
He also highlighted MBKS’ growing international recognition, noting that five technical papers submitted by the council were accepted for presentation at the 11th Global Conference of the Alliance for Healthy Cities in New South Wales, Australia, from Sept 1 to 3.
In addition, three senior MBKS officers were selected among only 30 participants worldwide to attend the final Residence Week of the Urban95 Academy at the London School of Economics and Political Science, fully funded by the Van Leer Foundation.
“This did not happen because of slogans, press statements or social media accusations. It came from strengthening our internal controls, improving transparency, enforcing accountability and ensuring that public resources are managed responsibly,” he said.
Wee said Sarawak deserves representatives who strengthen policies and bargain firmly for the State’s rights rather than remain trapped in a cycle of criticism.
“The people of Sarawak are wise enough to recognise the difference between those who merely complain and those who actually get things done,” he added. — DayakDaily
