KUCHING, Sept 24: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has called on the public to join forces in tearing down loan sharks’ (‘ah long’) advertisements from the streets and residential areas of Kuching City.
During the mayor’s 182nd ShallWeeTalk, which was streamed live on his official Facebook Page yesterday, he emphasised that banding together will show those illegal money lenders that the people of the city are opposed to them putting up those advertisements.
“This is also a way to demonstrate our power to them (the ‘ah long’). It shows them that we can take them down no matter how many advertisements they put up.
“Some may wonder if they will be beaten if they remove the advertisements. Certainly not. They are not going to do that. Therefore, I believe we should all work together to solve this problem,” he added.
Wee further noted that he has brought the matter to the attention of the police in the hopes that they will use the phone numbers listed in the advertisement to conduct further investigation.
Meanwhile, during an Anti-Scam Talk held yesterday at the MBKS Auditorium here, the mayor urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to look into implementing measures to blacklist and block loan sharks’ contact numbers displayed on illegally posted banners throughout the city.
Wee had previously taken a proactive stance by removing some of the banners from the streets. — DayakDaily
