KUCHING, March 8: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has advised the public to avoid Carpenter Street here in light of a fire that broke out there recently, affecting several shophouses and blocking off the street.

He said the firefighters from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) are currently in the midst of completely extinguishing the fire and sources of ignition.

ā€œIt (the firefighting operation) might take a while because the shophouses here have both sides ā€“ in the front and the back, so you can see the fast response from our Bomba where one of their fire trucks is on the other side.

ā€œI have instructed the police to clear the crowd here also because it is a bit dangerous. Whatever it is, we hope that Bomba will be fast enough to put out (the fire) and make sure that it will not spread to other shophouses because you know these are very old buildings,ā€ he told reporters when met at the scene today.

Wee further pointed out that many people would confuse Ewe Hai Street with Carpenter Street.

ā€œA lot of people thought that the whole stretch is Carpenter Street. It is not. After that (Carpenter Street) area, then you come down (along the road), it is then Ewe Hai Street. However, in general, we used to call (the whole stretch) Carpenter Street.

ā€œSo avoid this way coming in because they (the authorities) have blocked the road in order to make sure that Bomba personnel will be able to do their job here,ā€ he added. ā€” DayakDaily
