MBKS identified 12 locations for free school bus stops

KUCHING, Feb 25: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has identified 12 locations under its jurisdiction to build bus stops for free school bus service which will commence this April.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said all these bus stops can accommodate between 30 to 40 students.

“The existing public bus stops cannot accommodate such large number of students. Therefore, we have suggested to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to improve and upgrade this facility.

“MBKS will get those 20-feet used containers to be the new bus stops.  We will get them renovated and refurbished to suit the needs and accommodate between 30 to 40 students,” Wee said at a press conference after chairing MBKS meeting today.

He further explained that by using containers, they can easily move it to another location in the event of changes in routes.

A model container will be installed at Chung Hua Primary School No.3 this March.

Abang Johari had announced in his Budget 2020 that the Sarawak government will provide  free school bus services start in April.

The purpose of such service is to ease the burden faced by low-income families in urban areas where transportation cost to school is high.

Meanwhile, Wee also announced that MBKS will enforce a ban on the use of plastic straws in all food hawkers and centers under its jurisdiction starting this April. — DayakDaily
