KUCHING, June 15: In honour of Father’s Day today, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) celebrated the day by distributing s’houtao’ (longevity buns) at the Stutong Community Market and Kenyalang Market.

The initiative, led by Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and joined by MBKS councillors, is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to its Age-Friendly Cities programme.

According to a media release, while Mother’s Day is widely commemorated, Father’s Day can sometimes pass quietly.

Wee emphasised the importance of giving due recognition to the vital role fathers play in shaping families and communities.

“Many times, we remember our mothers on Mother’s Day, but we must also remind ourselves that our fathers, too, have made countless sacrifices for us. Today is a small gesture to honour their strength, love, and commitment,” said Wee.

The distribution of ‘shoutao’, a traditional bun symbolising health and longevity, serves not only as a token of appreciation but also as a cultural reminder of filial piety.

MBKS hopes the act will inspire the younger generation to cherish and respect their parents, in line with the Age-Friendly Cities programme, which aims to promote intergenerational care and stronger family bonds.

MBKS remains committed to fostering a caring, inclusive, and respectful city for people of all ages.

“This Father’s Day, let us all take a moment to appreciate the quiet heroes in our lives, our fathers,” said the media release. — DayakDaily
