KUCHING, Sept 27: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) hopes to introduce facilities similar to the Hui Sing Park Community Centre and Library to more parks within its jurisdiction.
According to MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, the centre—the first of its kind nationwide—is not just another open space, but a place to bring people together and encourage the public to organise their own activities.
Combining a community hall and library within a park setting, he said the centre is especially important as Kuching continues its efforts to become an age-friendly and child-friendly city.
It allows children to enjoy storytelling and studying while senior citizens can stay active through exercise and reading.
He further elaborated that the community will be consulted to incorporate their feedback into the park’s design before initiating the open tender process.
“We will review and support proposals from the community as the parks can be used not only during the day but also at night,” he said.
At the same time, he apologised for the delay caused by the rainy season.
“Despite the delays, we are finally pleased to open this space to the public,” he said during the opening ceremony of the centre at Hui Sing Park here today.
He also encouraged the community to take the lead in organising activities instead of depending fully on the council.
Meanwhile, MBKS also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Little Bean Storyland, which Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian also witnessed.
Also present were Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, MBKS Deputy Mayor Dato Suhaili Zaedi, Political Secretary to the Premier’s Office Kho Teck Wan, Deputy Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Desmond Douglas Jerukan, Little Bean Storyland chairman Nicole Siaw, as well as MBKS councillors and community leaders. — DayakDaily
