KUCHING, Feb 12: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) have been urged to identify a suitable location, such as Padungan Street, for a night market to enliven Kuching City for both locals and tourists.
A fan of night markets, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performance Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he envisions Kuching having a vibrant, must-visit spot that does not cause traffic congestion.
He suggested that roads could be closed or converted into pedestrian streets on weekends.
“For example, Jalan Padungan could become such a vibrant night market,” he told reporters at a press conference after officiating Seven Heritage Murals in celebration of Padungan’s 100th Annivesary today.
He stressed that while the councils would propose potential sites, his ministry would facilitate the development.
“The night market can become a platform to showcase local goods, products, and crafts, making it a signature attraction akin to the Moon Cake Festival or the Kuching Food Festival,” he added.
Abdul Karim believes a well-planned night market could leave a strong impression and further attract visitors to the city.
Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan and the MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng. — DayakDaily
