KUCHING, July 1: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has captured 541 dogs within its jurisdiction as of May this year, including the removal of sick dogs and even carcasses.
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng further revealed that MBKS has issued licenses for 215 dogs between January and May.
“In fact, the mass vaccination, microchipping and licensing for dogs is currently taking place at the Community Hall compound as part of the City Cleanliness Month.
“We hope that this campaign will encourage more pet owners to take responsibility by bringing their pets for vaccination, licensing registration and microchipping,” he said when launching the City Cleanliness Month at the Community Hall near MBKS headquarters here today.
The campaign received an encouraging response, with a long queues of cars seen entering the Community Hall as pet owners seized the opportunity to ensure their pets received rabies vaccination, licensing and microchipping.
Since 2022, July has been designated as Cleanliness Month, during which MBKS collaborated with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to organise various cleaning campaigns in addition to routine public cleaning works.
Although on a modest scale, Wee said the activities organised by MBKS, in partnership with non-governmental organisations, private companies, and schools, were aimed at instilling a love for nature and cultivating environmental awareness among Kuchingnites, particularly the younger generation.
Public cleaning works encompass a wide range of tasks, including rubbish collection, street sweeping, desludging, maintenance of public toilets, vector control, dog catching, and even addressing complaints.
Wee emphasised the importance of public cooperation in maintaining the city, while urging citizens to refrain from littering in public areas.
“In fact, beautification, maintenance, and cleaning activities are not limited to July alone but carried out throughout the year, with the aim of providing excellent service to the public.
“This month is where we are able to showcase to the public our activities and for the public to give support us every step of the way, as Kuching city is everyone’s responsibility,” he added.
Wee affirmed the Council’s commitment to making Kuching South a more pleasant and hospitable city for its residents and workers, underscoring that the responsibility lies with everyone in the community.
