KUCHING, Oct 22: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has called for greater private-sector support in addressing community needs and improving school environments through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said cooperation between local authorities and businesses was essential to delivering meaningful and lasting benefits to the community.
He commended AMCAN Sdn Bhd for supporting SK Kenyalang by sponsoring roofing materials to repair storm damage and pledging to provide extractor fans to improve ventilation.
In September, strong winds blew off several roofing sheets at the school, causing water leakage and posing safety risks to pupils and teachers. Following a site inspection by Wee, AMCAN sponsored the roofing materials, while Wan Li Wan Welding Works carried out the repairs.
Wee said AMCAN’s willingness to extend its assistance beyond the initial repairs demonstrated how businesses could make a practical difference to the community.
“When the school faced roofing problems, AMCAN came forward to help. Now, upon learning about the ventilation concerns, the company has once again responded positively.
“This is the kind of corporate social responsibility that makes a real difference to the community,” he said in a statement following a ceremony at the school yesterday (Oct 21).
During the ceremony, AMCAN received a commemorative plaque in recognition of its contribution towards repairing the roofing at the school’s assembly area and canteen.
During a subsequent walkabout, Wee noted that both areas remained hot and uncomfortable due to inadequate ventilation.
AMCAN managing director Lim San Hock subsequently agreed to contribute extractor fans to improve air circulation and provide a more comfortable environment for pupils and teachers.
Wee said CSR should be measured not merely by the value of contributions, but by the tangible benefits delivered to the community.
“Practical improvements, such as repairing leaking roofs and improving ventilation, could significantly enhance the daily lives of pupils and teachers.
“The initiative also supported MBKS’ Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Plan of Action, which focuses on creating safer, healthier and more comfortable environments for children,” he added.
Wee thanked AMCAN and Wan Li Wan Welding Works for their contributions and expressed hope that more businesses would undertake CSR initiatives to address community needs. — DayakDaily
