KUCHING, April 2: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is holding off on implementing the federal work-from-home policy until it receives guidance from the Sarawak government.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced the policy, MBKS has yet to receive official instructions from the state.
“I think our Sarawak government is looking into how to address all the issues that are coming up. Let’s wait for their announcement.
“For the time being, we have not received any instructions from them,” he told reporters after handing over food aid to KMC Flats residents today.
Nevertheless, Wee noted that local conditions in Sarawak differ from other parts of the country, where some people have been working remotely and minor traffic jams have been reported.
“Personally, I still prefer to see people working in the office, whether it’s more effective or not is another matter.
“Any work-from-home arrangement must have a good reason to support it. Yes, you’re talking about petrol pricing and other challenges, but so far we are maintaining quite well, especially now,” he added.
Last night (April 1), Anwar announced that the federal Cabinet has agreed to implement a work-from-home policy for ministries, agencies, statutory bodies, and government-linked companies (GLCs) starting April 15, 2026.
He explained that the purpose of this initiative is to save fuel and ensure a sustainable supply of energy for the country. He added that further details will be announced soon. — DayakDaily
