KUCHING, Sept 1: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has lauded KANTIN’s double nominations at the prestigious World Culinary Awards 2025, hailing the milestone as a powerful affirmation of Kuching’s culinary identity and a testament to the creativity of its young entrepreneurs.
KANTIN at Jewel Changi, Singapore, has been shortlisted for Asia’s Best New Restaurant, competing alongside world-renowned names including Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill. Meanwhile, KANTIN at The Granary – nestled in a century-old warehouse in Kuching – has been recognised as a finalist for Malaysia’s Best Restaurant.
“As we continue our campaign for Kuching to be recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, achievements like KANTIN’s prove that our food culture is not only unique but also world-class,” Wee said in a statement today.
He emphasised that Kuching’s culinary scene is fuelled by the vision and determination of young Sarawakian entrepreneurs who balance innovation with tradition.
“KANTIN’s journey from the heart of Kuching to the world stage is a story of vision, resilience and creativity. It inspires not only the F&B (food and beverages) industry but our whole city,” he added.
The Mayor also highlighted the city’s long-standing commitment to promoting its vibrant food culture, rooted in Sarawak’s diverse heritage.
He emphasised that restaurants like KANTIN, along with many other local establishments, are paving the way for Kuching’s recognition internationally, not just as a travel destination but as an emerging culinary capital.
“Food is part of our identity. When Sarawakian restaurants succeed internationally, it is not just their win – it is Kuching’s win. Together, we are building a legacy that celebrates our unique flavours, nurtures creativity, and inspires the next generation,” he said.
The Mayor’s Office further reaffirmed its support for nurturing local culinary talents and pledged continued collaboration with the food and creative industries to raise Kuching’s global profile. — DayakDaily
