Marudi-born Ummi Masitah Hassan shines at World Pencak Silat Championship

MIRI, Dec 27: Young silat prodigy from Marudi, Ummi Masitah Hassan, etched her name in history by winning a silver medal at the 20th World Pencak Silat Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Competing internationally for the first time, Ummi Masitah displayed extraordinary skill and determination, defeating Vietnam’s Le Thi Van Anh in the ‘Tanding Putri Kelas C Senior’ category.

To honour her exceptional achievement, the Sarawak Sports Council (MSNS) and the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) hosted a special appreciation ceremony at the Imperial Palace Hotel, Miri, yesterday (Dec 26), Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) reported.

This accomplishment follows her earlier success at SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024, where she secured a gold medal, solidifying her status as one of Sarawak’s premier athletes.

Her stellar performances also earned her a place on Malaysia’s national silat team, contributing to the nation’s recognition on the global stage.

At the championship, the Malaysian team collectively garnered six gold, nine silver, and four bronze medals, reflecting the country’s strong presence in the sport.

The appreciation ceremony not only celebrated Ummi Masitah’s outstanding success but also acknowledged the efforts of all parties involved in nurturing silat in Sarawak.

It is hoped that her achievement will inspire more young athletes to excel and bring further glory to the State and nation internationally.
