Marine Police seize more than RM700,000 worth of contraband cigarettes, liquor

KUCHING, Feb 7: The Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 seized various types of contraband liquor and cigarettes worth RM724,570 from a business premises located at Jalan Penrissen, here yesterday.

According to commander, ACP Ab Rahman Mat Hasan, the team received a tip-off about the premises and launched Op Taring Landai to investigate further.

“The inspection found various types of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes that were untaxed and did not have stamps from the Royal Malaysian Customs,” Ab Rahman said.

He added that a local man was also detained for further investigation under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

“The suspect was detained and the seized items were handed over to the Investigating Officer BJSJ IPD Padawan, Sarawak for further action and investigation under the Customs Act 1967,” he said.

If found guilty under the Customs Act 1967 (Section 135 (1) (d), the offender could be fined not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisoned for not more than five years or both. – DayakDaily
