Marine Intelligence Unit cracks down on smuggling, confiscates RM141k worth of contraband

Contraband liquor and cigarettes seized inside the van.

MIRI, May 3: In a significant crackdown on illicit activities, the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) in Sarawak Region 5 made a crucial arrest involving the smuggling of cigarettes and liquor.

On Thursday (May 2), around 4pm, a team of four members from the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) Tactical Headquarters, based in Miri, intercepted a white Toyota motorvan along Jalan Taman Jelita Utama, Taman Tunku during an operation dubbed ‘Ops Kontraban’.

“Miri Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu stated that upon inspection, a stash of various types of cigarettes and non-taxable liquor was discovered concealed in the vehicle,” said a police spokesperson.

The driver of the motorvan failed to furnish any valid documents from customs authorities upon interrogation, raising suspicions of illegal smuggling activities.

The seized items, including the motorvan itself, were estimated to have a total value of RM 141,921.42.

The confiscated goods and the apprehended individual were handed over to the investigating officer at Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID) IPD Miri for further inquiry and legal action.

The case is being investigated under the Custom Act 1967. — DayakDaily
