Man suspected of smuggling migrants jailed one month for giving bribe to immigration officer

KUCHING, May3: The Special Court for Corruption here sentenced a man to one month’s jail for giving gratification to a government servant.

Wong Zhong Zhen, 32, pleaded guilty to the alternative charge framed under Section 214 of the Penal Code.


Sessions Court Judge Steve Ritikos sentenced him to imprisonment of one month, with effect from the date of remand, which is March 18, 2021.

Wong was charged with corruptly giving gratification of RM1,150 cash to an Immigration Officer in consideration to conceal the offence against him where he was suspected to have smuggled Indonesian nationals, which is an offence under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking In Persons And Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 while he was travelling on the Bau-Lundu road to Kuching, at about 6.44am on November 18, 2020. — DayakDaily
