KUCHING, March 6: A 25-year-old man will be spending the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri behind bars after the Magistrate’s Court here sentenced him to seven months in prison for threatening to kill his elder brother with a machete over a monetary dispute.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan handed down the sentence to the accused, Fikri, after he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code. The court found him guilty of criminal intimidation by making death threats against his 31-year-old brother while wielding a machete.
The incident occurred at their home in Kampung Paya Mebi, Jalan Landeh, on March 2 at approximately 6.30pm.
According to the case facts, the complainant and his mother were preparing food for breaking fast when Fikri arrived at the house and asked his mother for money. However, she informed him that she had none to give.
The complainant advised Fikri to wait until after breaking fast, but this response did not sit well with the accused. Enraged, he retrieved a machete from his car and returned to the house.
Fikri repeatedly struck the door with the weapon while making threats. During the confrontation, , the blade slipped through a gap in the door, injuring his brother’s wrist.
Fearing for their safety, the complainant and his mother quickly shut the door and later filed a police report, leading to Fikri’s arrest.
Investigations confirmed that Fikri had issued death threats that instilled fear in the complainant. The machete used in the incident was also confiscated by authorities.
With the court’s ruling, Fikri is now set to serve his sentence behind bars, missing the upcoming festive celebrations with his family. – DayakDaily
