KUCHING, July 31: A 30-year-old man was sentenced to seven years in prison and three strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court for robbing a convenience store cashier with a folding saw.
Judge Iris Awen Jon handed down the sentence to Mohammad Nasrullah Abdullah after he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 of the same code.
The section stipulates a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison, a fine, or caning upon conviction.
Mohammad Nasrullah was charged with committing the offense at a 24-hour convenience store on Jalan Main Bazaar at approximately 4.14am on July 24, 2024.
According to the case facts, the 19-year-old cashier was approached by Mohammad Nasrullah, who was armed with a folding saw. Fearing for his safety, the cashier handed over RM700 to Mohammad Nasrullah, who then fled the scene.
The cashier was unharmed during the incident.
A police report was filed, leading to the arrest of Mohammad Nasrullah the following day (July 25, 2024).
Investigations revealed that Mohammad Nasrullah did not use any mask or face covering during the robbery, allowing the victim to positively identify him during a police lineup. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage also corroborated the presence and actions of Mohammad Nasrullah using the folding saw to commit the robbery.
Furthermore, the victim identified the confiscated folding saw as the weapon used by Mohammad Nasrullah during the incident.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Norshafatihah Nor Azmi, while Mohammad Nasrullah was not represented by a lawyer. — DayakDaily
