Man runs amok on rooftop with knife in Miri’s Taman Bumiko, arrested after 4-hour standoff

MIRI, July 10: A tense early morning standoff unfolded in Taman Bumiko here today, as police successfully apprehended a man who ran amok with a knife on the roof of a house, following a four-hour negotiation.

Miri District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed the incident, which occurred at around 2.10am, after police received an emergency call from a member of the public reporting that a man was acting violently and wielding a knife in the residential area.

Responding swiftly, police arrived at the scene to find the suspect on the roof of the victim’s home, clutching a vegetable-cutting knife.

“The suspect, identified as the husband of the victim, refused to come down or surrender immediately.

“Negotiations with the suspect lasted for approximately four hours. At about 7.40am, our personnel managed to persuade the suspect to drop the weapon and come down peacefully. He was arrested without incident,” he said in a statement today.

Police seized the knife as part of their investigation, and the suspect was brought into custody.

“He is being investigated under Sections 506, 448, and 427 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, house trespass, and mischief,” he disclosed.

Mohd Farhan added that urine test conducted after the arrest revealed that the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

He now also faces charges under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries penalties of up to five years in prison or a RM5,000 fine.

“Further checks showed that the man has four previous criminal records,” he said.
