Man nabbed in Niah for fishing using electric shock devices

A man was detained for using illegal fishing devices to catch fish and prawns in Niah.

MIRI, March 16: A local man was detained on Tuesday night (March 14) by the police for using illegal fishing equipment in Sungai Niah, near Kampung Tanjong Belipat ,Niah .

Miri Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said, the man was arrested by the Marine Police Region 5 at 9.45pm during an operation dubbed Ops Pensura.


It was believed that the man was using electric shock devices to catch fish and prawns in the area.

During the arrest, police also seized several fishing devices including an outboard motor with 3.3 horse power (Evinrude) worth RM3,200; a boat (RM1,500); a Niko battery (Nx1207L worth RM200); a bamboo stick wrapped with electrical wires and a fish landing net (RM50); various types of prawns and fish weighing 1 kilogramme worth about RM80; and a power inverter X 120-986000W valued at RM80.

The total seizure was valued at RM5,110.
