SIBU, May 6: An electrician became the latest victim of a facemask and hand sanitiser scam after he was cheated of RM1,800.

According to Sibu district police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, the 46-year-old complainant had bought the items but they were not delivered to him.

ACP Stanley said that at about 6 pm on April 20, the complainant saw an advertisement on Facebook by one “Andy” who claimed to be selling facemasks and sanitiser.

“As he was interested in buying them, the complainant contacted the suspect through WhatsApp. After that he made a bank transfer of RM300 for the hand sanitiser to an account number provided by the suspect,” he said.

Three days later, the complainant paid another RM1,500 for the purchase of facemasks.

After waiting for almost three weeks, the complainant tried to contact the suspect as he had not received the items yet.

He added that the complainant lodged a police report on May 5 after he realised that he had been cheated.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.—DayakDaily
