Man killed in hunting mishap in Nanga Dayu, Pakan

JULAU, Aug 26: A hunting trip turned tragic when one of three friends was shot dead after he was mistaken for a bird.

Julau District police chief DSP Andam Sulin said his station was alerted of the incident by a member of the public who called at about 9.25pm on Aug 25, saying that someone was killed in Nanga Dayu, Pakan.

“Our investigation revealed that the incident happened in an area between Rumah Uding, Ulu Budu, Saratok and Rumah Anthony, Sungai Merah Dayu, Pakan.


Prior to the incident at about 2.30pm, the victim with two friends had gone to Rumah Anthony to hunt for wild animals,” he said.

After two hours of walking, they decided to rest at a place.

Just then another man who was walking to Ulu Budu, fired his shotgun, thinking that the victim was a bird.

When the suspect, 45, saw that he had shot the victim, he apologied to the latter’s friends.

“The suspect surrendered himself at the police station two hours later,” said Andam.

The victim died from gunshot wounds on his head and body.

The case is being investigated under Section 304 of the Penal Code and Section 8 of the Arms Act 1960. ā€” DayakDaily
