KUCHING, June 10: Police have arrested a local man in his 20s believed to be involved in an armed gang robbery that occurred along Jalan Song Thian Cheok here on May 31.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident was reported to police at about 12.02am on May 31, involving a group robbery carried out with the use of a weapon at the roadside.
Following investigations, a police team arrested the suspect at about 11.45am on June 8.
“Initial checks found that the suspect has no prior criminal record,” he said in a statement today.
Police also seized a white iPhone 13 believed to have been used in connection with the crime to assist in further investigations.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days after a remand application was approved by the Kuching Magistrate’s Court to facilitate further investigations.
The case is being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery with the use of a weapon, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
Alexson advised members of the public to remain vigilant and strengthen security measures at their homes, including installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and alarm systems, as well as ensuring doors and gates are securely locked, especially at night.
