KUCHING, Aug 3: A man has been sentenced to a year in prison by the Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to attempting to burn down a petrol station.
Syafiq Fadhullah Hussaini, 32, pleaded guilty to the charge read before Sessions Court Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.
He was charged with committing the act at a petrol station at Batu 13, Jalan Kuching-Serian, at about 8.30am on July 30.
He was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 511 of the same Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment and a possible fine.
According to the facts of the case, during the incident, the accused attempted to burn down the petrol station because his request to fill his motorcycle with petrol for free due to lack of money, was rejected by the station’s employee.
Furthermore, he also demanded cash, a pack of cigarettes and a prepaid phone card, but his requests were not entertained either.
As a result, the accused became angry, grabbed a gas pump nozzle, lit a lighter and threatened to set the station on fire.
Upon witnessing this, the station workers shouted for help from their colleagues to restrain the accused and immediately contacted the police.
The prosecution of the case was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer. — DayakDaily
