Man found drowned, 16yo nephew missing after setting fish nets in river near Kampung Pulau Brunei, Limbang

KUCHING, Feb 16: A 62-year-old man who went to set up fish traps with his 16-year-old nephew yesterday was found drowned this afternoon, washed ashore on the riverbank near Kampung Pulau Brunei, Limbang, today.

However, his nephew remains missing.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, the victim and his nephew went to the river to set up fishing nets yesterday (Feb 15) at 1pm.

At around 11.24am the following day, after they failed to return home, a concerned relative went searching for them and discovered the 62-year-old man had drowned and was washed ashore on the riverbank near Kampung Pulau Brunei. The nephew was nowhere to be found.

They immediately contacted the Fire and Rescue Department and a team from the Limbang fire station was dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival at the scene at 2.30pm today, the team first retrieved the body of the drowned victim from the river and handed over the deceased to the police for further action before launching a search and rescue (SAR) operation for the missing teenager.

The rescue team conducted a thorough search within a 2-kilometre radius, covering both land and river.

By 5.30pm, the rescue team reconvened at the staging point to receive a briefing from the head of operations.

At 6pm, the teenager has yet to be found but the SAR operation had to be postponed due to fading daylight. The SAR operation for the boy is expected to continue tomorrow. – DayakDaily
