KUCHING, Apr 10: A 23-year-old man was fined RM3,000, in default of 10 months’ imprisonment, after admitting to threatening a resident by hurling a petrol-filled bottle at a house in Kampung Demak Baru Phase 2 along Jalan Bako.
Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali handed down the sentence on Sulaiman Mohamat after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same law.
The offence carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
According to the case facts, the incident occurred at about 5.35am on March 21. The victim was alerted after hearing the house alarm and, upon checking, discovered a plastic bottle containing petrol near a vehicle, along with burn marks on the cement floor outside the house.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage later showed a silver car approaching the residence before an object believed to be the petrol-filled bottle was thrown into the compound and ignited.
Although no major damage was reported, scorch marks were found outside the premises.
A police report was subsequently lodged, leading to Sulaiman’s arrest on April 1 at around 1.50pm at a house in Kampung Tupong Tengah, Petra Jaya.
Investigations revealed that he had carried out the act with an accomplice who remains at large. The pair are believed to have used a petrol-filled bottle resembling a Molotov cocktail, which was thrown and set alight as a form of intimidation.
Police also seized a silver car and two mobile phones, all of which were handed over by the accused.
Further inquiries indicated that Sulaiman had allegedly been paid RM100 by another individual to carry out the act as a threat.
