KUCHING, April 17: In the Magistrate’s Court today, a local man was fined RM2,000 after pleading guilty to possessing and selling fireworks and firecrackers without a valid license.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan also ordered Hassan Selamat, 42, to serve five months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

Hassan was charged under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 for committing the offense on the sidewalk near a fast-food restaurant on Jalan Satok here on April 3, 2024, around 10.30pm.

The charge sheet stated that a police team inspected the sidewalk and arrested Hassan for conducting the sale and storage of fireworks without a valid permit and license.

Investigations revealed that the North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) had not issued a business license for operations at the location.

Additionally, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) had not received any license applications from the accused to sell fireworks for the celebration.

The accused, unrepresented by legal counsel, faced prosecution handled by Inspector Ammarsoffi Yusoff. — DayakDaily
