Man drowned while son escapes after vehicle plunges into drain in Sibu

SIBU, Oct 27: A man was drowned while his son managed to escape after their vehicle plunged into a drain along a major road in Sibu, on Saturday night.

In the incident, the victim Asri Rizal Rahim, 41, together with his 9-year-old son were trapped in their vehicle after it plunged into a drain along Jalan Ling Kai Cheng.

According to Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) head of operation PBK II Shairulnizam Wailie, after receiving the call at 10.44pm, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and a unit of Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) together with seven personnel were sent to the scene.


He said upon arrival, they found a sedan car that was turned upside down inside the drain, while the victim was trapped inside.

“The Fire fighters have to used a winch to pull the vehicle to the side, before successfully moved the victim out of the vehicle.

“The victim, however, was pronounced dead by the medical team and his body was handed over to the police for further action,” said Shairulnizam.

The victim’s young son survived after being removed from the car by the public before the arrival of Bomba.  He was sent to the Sibu Hospital by Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) from Sungai Merah.  — DayakDaily
