SIBU, April 19: A man died after a hydraulic drum exploded at a recycling centre in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Sibu, yesterday (April 18).

According to a news report by TV Sarawak (TVS), the Sibu District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said that they received a call from the public regarding the incident at about 1.30pm.

In response to the report, the Sibu IPD Criminal Investigation Division was later rushed to the area of the incident and found the 37-year-old victim, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

“An examination of the victim’s body revealed that the deceased sustained severe head injuries and a broken left hand.

“The cause of the incident is believed to be that the victim had cut an iron rod on top of a ‘Repsol’ brand oil barrel using an oxygen cutter.

“As a result of the heat, the hydraulic oil tank had expanded and exploded, resulting in an accident to the victim,” said Zulkipli in his statement yesterday.

He also said that no other victims were injured in the incident, and no property was damaged. With the ongoing active investigation, the authorities have found that there was no element of crime in the incident.

“The victim’s body has been taken to the Sibu hospital mortuary for further action, and an autopsy will be conducted on April 19 to determine the cause of death,” he said.

The case was classified as a Sudden Death Report (SDR), and the public is urged not to make any speculations regarding the incident. — DayakDaily
