KAPIT, Sept 2: A man was killed after he was shot by his own friend while hunting in a forest bordering the Tanyit river in Merit.

Kapit District Police Chief DSP Freddy Bian said investigations revealed that the 36-year-old victim together with the suspect, 45, and two other friends had travelled to the forest at around 3pm yesterday before they went their separate ways.

“The suspect is believed to have mistakenly shot the victim because he thought his friend was a wild boar as it was then quite dark in the forest,” he said.

“The victim suffered severe injuries to the abdomen and thighs and died on the way back to the camp where they worked.”

DSP Freddy said the suspect had surrendered at the Kapit police station this morning and will be remanded to assist in the investigation under Section 304a of the penal code and Section 8(1) of the Arms Act 1960. — DayakDaily
