Man detained over viral torn Quran video in Kuching; police cite mental health issues

KUCHING, Jan 27: Police have detained a 57-year-old man in connection with a viral video on social media showing torn pages of the Quran found along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman towards Jalan Borneo here.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspect was arrested at about 11.30am yesterday (Jan 26) at a food premises in the Taman Green Hill area.

According to a TVS report, Alexson said initial investigations found that the incident occurred on Jan 23 at around 8.40pm.

“Two videos related to the incident were uploaded by a netizen on Facebook, and the incident was also confirmed through closed-circuit television footage at the location.

“Initial investigations indicate that the suspect is believed to have mental health issues, and the act was not committed with the intention to provoke or incite tension involving 3R issues,” he said in a statement recently.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship or sacred object with intent to insult a religion, which carries a punishment of up to two years’ imprisonment or a fine, or both.

“In addition, investigations are also being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year, or both,” he added.

Alexson urged members of the public with further information related to the incident to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Logeswara Tharumalay @ Krishnan, at 018-291 4239 or to approach the nearest police station to assist with investigations. — DayakDaily
