KUCHING, Sept 11: A man has demanded a refund of RM99.36 that was transferred from his savings account without his permission to an insurance company, as well as an additional RM500 to compensate for the distress he has experienced.

Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman and Stampin MP, Chong Chieng Jen, said the victim known as Mr Lim, has clarified that he did not take up or need any insurance policy from the insurance company.

However, on Sept 11, a sum of RM99.36 was paid from his bank account to the said company.

Chong further said, according to Mr Lim, this is the second time that such unauthorised transaction from the victim’s savings has occurred.

He initially had RM150 credited into his savings account under the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) 2024 programme on Aug 28, but a sum of RM142.56 was transferred to another insurance company without his consent (auto debit) the following day.

Upon complaint, the RM142.56 was refunded to him on Sept 10.

“Something is very wrong. I think [the bank] owes him (Mr Lim) an explanation and this thing cannot be happening repeatedly.

“I have written to both parties (the bank and the first insurance company) to cancel any ‘subscription policy’ that Mr Lim has,” he said in a Facebook livestream today.

Chong also said given such repeated unauthorised transfers, on behalf of Mr Lim, he demanded that the bank pay a sum of RM500 to the victim for all the distress, anxiety and inconvenience inflicted upon him.

He also called upon the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to take immediate action on this matter considering that this occurrence could happen to other STR recipients. — DayakDaily
