Man claims trial for demanding RM20,000 breakup fee and threatening ex-girlfriend

KUCHING, Sept 23: A man claimed trial to extortion and criminal intimidation for demanding a breakup fee and threatening to crash his ex-girlfriend’s car if she failed to pay.

Lai Mun Naim, 39, was charged with two charges. He pleaded not guilty to both.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi fixed October 30 for pre-trial case management and allowed the accused to be released on cash bail of RM 2,500 with one local surety.

He allegedly tried to extort his 38-year-old ex-girlfriend by demanding a RM20,000 breakup fee at the victim’s house in Taman Indah Landeh and threatened to crash her car if she failed to pay the accused, at about 1.30 am on September 13, 2020.

He was charged under Section 385 of the Penal Code for extortion, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 7 years or with fine or with whipping or with any two of such punishment, upon conviction.

He was also charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 2 years, or with fine, or with both, upon conviction.
