Man charged with trafficking 744gm of syabu, faces possible death sentence

KUCHING, April 25: A jobless man faced three charges of trafficking a total gross weight of 744 grammes of Syabu in the Magistrate’s Court here today.

Liew Hock Lai, 38, was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries a death sentence or imprisonment for life and whipping of not less than 15 strokes, upon conviction.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi fixed June 10 for mention of the case with regards to the update on the chemist’s report on the substance found.

The accused will be further remanded in Puncak Borneo Prison.

For the first and second charge, the accused was charged with trafficking 282 grammes of methamphetamine and 247 grams of a substance believed to be methamphetamine respectively at a house in Jalan Stutong Baru, at about 10.30am on April 13, 2022.

For the third charge, he was charged with trafficking 215 grammes of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, at a condominium along Jalan Wan Alwi, at about 11.45am on April 13, 2022.
