SIBU,Jan 11: A jobless man punched the touchscreen of an ATM in a fit of anger until the screen broke, after failing to withdraw money from his account following an ATM malfunction.

He was subsequently arrested for causing mischief resulting in damage to the machine.

Sibu District police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said at 5.55pm, a security guard of a supermarket in Jalan Salim heard a loud noise from the ATM machine area which is located at a corner of the supermarket.

“He ran over and saw a man punching the touchscreen of the ATM using his hand until it broke. The guard then called his colleagues who later arrested the suspect,” he said.

The 35-year-old suspect was later handed over to the police.

“Our investigation revealed that the suspect came to the supermarket with his nine-year-old son. He then wanted to withdraw RM1,000 from his account. He had keyed in the correct PIN number but somehow the system jammed and his card was swallowed by the machine,” he said.

Overwhelmed by anger, the suspect punched the touchscreen of the machine until it broke.

Stanley said the suspect had previous records of violence crime, including offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act and for possession of stolen goods.

The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code. — DayakDaily
