GOF and SFC officers rescued various species of protected birds in Bau

KUCHING, Jan 24: The General Operations Force (GOF) here rescued 63 various species of protected birds worth RM66,600 from a house in Bau yesterday.

Deputy commander, ACP Kaderi Said, said nine GOF personnel and four Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) officers were involved in the operation.

Upon public tip off and surveillance, the officers sprang into action at about 10.30am during “Op Bersepadu Khazanah”.


They found various colourful protected birds such as Eclectus parrot (2), Cockatiel (4), Budgiepigar (21), Parrotlet (3), Sun Conure (2), Monk Parrot (4), Love Bird (11), Diamond Dove (12), Red Lory (2) and peacock (2), all caged up and identified according to grades in the compound.

A 45-year-old man, believed to be the owner of the birds, was detained after failing to produce any permits or licences for the birds.

The case has been handed over to SFC for investigation under Section 29 of the Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998, which carries a fine of RM10,000 and a one-year jail sentence if convicted. — DayakDaily
