KUCHING, Jan 29: Malaysia supports the People’s Republic of China and Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (BOCWOG) for hosting the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China Dato Seri Tiong King Sing said the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, held from Feb 4 to Feb 20, will make Beijing the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
“Malaysia is honoured to be a part of this historic occasion with the significant contributions by top Malaysian entrepreneurs, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay and Datuk Lim Chee Wah by providing the games venue and investment respectively at Genting Snow Park and Genting Resort Secret Garden.
“The Genting Snow Park is where 20 gold medals will be up for contest in the Winter Olympic Games, and eight gold medals will be up for contest in the Paralympic Games, while the Genting Resort Secret Garden will accommodate the athletes, officials, and media,” he said in a statement today.
Tiong, who is also Malaysia-China Business Council chairman, further said Malaysia has always been a fervent supporter of sports at all levels and shares a strong and deep-rooted relationship with China.
He explained that the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen and promote the relationship of both countries, especially in sports development.
He also mentioned that two outstanding Malaysian athletes would participate in two events: Aruwin Salehhuddin in Women’s Slalom and Jeffrey Webb in Men’s Slalom, accompanied by chef de mission Moira Tan Siew See and secretary Fong Wan Hor.
“The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will instil the values and ideals of the Olympic Spirit to promote friendship, excellence, respect, courage, determination, inspiration, and equality.
“Therefore, we do not advocate for the politicisation of sports and firmly disagree with all forms of diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
“We wish the People’s Republic of China all the success in organising the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and upholding the Olympic Spirit to promote sports development and build a better world with the spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
