KUCHING, March 21: Effective April 1, 2025, all passengers travelling with Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and MASwings are prohibited from charging or using their power banks during flights.
According to a post on its website, Malaysia Airlines announced that passengers must comply with the updated policy on carrying power banks on board, adding that passengers must carry their power banks on-person at all times.
“Power banks must be carried with you at all times and should not be placed in the overhead compartments. During the flight, you may store them in your carry-on bag under the seat or in the seat pocket in front of you.
“Magnetic wireless charging power banks must be kept in a separate bag or protective pouch to prevent unintentional activation.”
The airline added that carrying power banks and spare lithium-ion batteries in checked baggage is strictly prohibited.
“These policies are in place to ensure flight safety,” it said.
On March 15, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said that it is up to airlines to decide if power bank usage during flights should be banned.
This followed concerns regarding on-board incidents due to power banks as on January 28, an aircraft belonging to Air Busan was severely damaged at the Gimhae International Airport in South Korea after a faulty external battery pack caught fire. — DayakDaily
