KUCHING, July 10: Several major areas in Kuching are experiencing a blackout, after the power went out in residential areas throughout the city, with reports coming in about the power outage stretching as far as Sibu, Miri and Bintulu.
The blackout, which occurred at approximately 9.20pm, also affected mobile data networks, with several telecommunications providers experiencing major network slowdown.
The authorities are still ascertaining the situation. Residents are advised to stay indoors and await further updates.
Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) tweeted at 9.45pm that its 275kV transmission lines had experienced a power trip, causing a major supply disruption.
A second tweet at 9.58pm explained that “double circuit tripping of Murum transmission lines has cause major supply interruption”.
The team are working to safely restore the power progressively.
Meanwhile, at 11.15pm, DayakDaily received a press release from Sarawak Energy stating that “a double circuit tripping of the 275kV Murum transmission line, caused a power outage at about 9.30 pm and affected customers in several parts of Sarawak”.
“Major areas affected were Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Mukah, Sibu, Bintulu and parts of Miri. Restoration works commenced immediately with supply safely restored to affected areas progressively with almost full restoration by 10.30pm,” said Sarawak Energy.
It apologised for inconvenience caused and assured Sarawakians affected that it is investigating the cause of that led to the interruption.
The last major power outage in Kuching occurred in 2019, after damage to SEB’s underground cables caused blackouts throughout the city. — DayakDaily
