KUCHING, March 3: With the Lun Bawang community currently represented by two prominent leaders—Ba’ Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian and Lawas MP Dato Henry Sum Agong—there is a growing call for the next generation to step up and carry the torch of leadership while preserving their rich cultural heritage.

Baru Bian emphasised the importance of grooming young leaders with integrity and professionalism to ensure the long-term strength of the Lun Bawang community.

“You are the new generation of leaders. Strive for professionalism in your roles, elevate your standards, and uphold integrity so that you can be role models for those who come after you.

“When we lead by example, we not only protect the unity that binds us but also set a standard for others to follow,” he said during the Sarawak Lun Bawang Association (PLBS) Women’s Division & PLBS Kuching Women’s Branch Dinner recently.

His remarks came at a time when the Lun Bawang community enjoys strong representation at both the State and federal levels, with Henry Sum currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Lawas.

Among those present at the event were Sarawak Premier’s Political Secretary Sam Laya, PLBS Kuching Division Advisor Dr Kasing Apun, PLBS Sarawak Women’s Division Chairperson Dorothy Suut, and PLBS Kuching Branch Chairperson Zehegkiel Piree.

Baru also highlighted the invaluable contributions of Lun Bawang women, acknowledging their dedication and effectiveness in community-building efforts.

He further urged the community to actively preserve and promote Lun Bawang traditions, stressing the need for continuous efforts to showcase their unique culture to the world.

“Well-planned cultural programmes can help elevate the Lun Bawang identity. That’s why it is essential for PLBS to remain consistent in organising impactful events,” he added.

To support these efforts, Baru announced a RM25,000 contribution to PLBS Kuching and RM10,000 to PLBS Sarawak Women’s Division for cultural and community programs this year. – DayakDaily
