KUCHING, Nov 28: Kabong assemblyman Dato Mohd Chee Kadir has called on the Sarawak government to lower the age limit of 40 years for obtaining a special boat license, saying the restriction is preventing young fishermen aged 18 to 40 from pursuing legal and stable livelihoods.

Mohd Chee highlighted that reducing the age limit would make the licensing system more inclusive, improve compliance with regulations, reduce unlicensed boats, and safeguard the welfare of the fishing community, which forms the backbone of Kabong’s coastal economy.

“I urge the State government, through the Sarawak Fisheries Department, to review this age requirement so that it is more inclusive and does not hinder young fishermen from securing stable jobs and providing income for their families,” he said when participating in the debate on the Sarawak Budget 2026 at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly sitting today.

Noting that fishermen’s incomes are still largely seasonal and vulnerable, he stressed that support such as assistance with boats, engines, and modern nets should be strengthened to help sustain the local fishing community.

Mohd Chee also called for the Kabong International Beach Trail Marathon (KIBTM) to be included in the Sarawak’s official tourism calendar, with dedicated funding to ensure the event is organised in a structured manner that meets international standards.

“The beach marathon, along with the Kabong International Kite Festival (KIKF) has put Kabong on the global map while stimulating local enterprises such as homestays, food vendors, and creative arts and crafts,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of promoting local tourism as a driver of economic growth. — DayakDaily
