KUCHING, March 12: A review of the BAS.MY bus routes in Kuching has been proposed after passenger numbers on some services were observed to remain relatively low.
Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said ridership on several BAS.MY routes could be improved, highlighting the need to reassess the existing route planning and service operations to make bus services more attractive to commuters.
“To encourage people to shift from private vehicles to public transport, the services must be convenient, efficient and aligned with actual travel patterns,” he said when speaking while chairing the Sarawak Public Transport Committee (SPTC) Meeting No.1/2026 yesterday (March 11).
He suggested that the relevant authorities review the existing BAS.MY routes and operational planning to ensure the services better match public mobility needs.
During the meeting, committee members were also briefed on updates related to the BAS.MY programme implemented by the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak.

In his opening remarks, Lee noted that as Sarawak continues to develop, strengthening public transport systems will be crucial in addressing increasing traffic congestion in urban areas.
Other challenges highlighted included improving logistics efficiency, upgrading river transport infrastructure relied upon by rural communities, and enhancing air connectivity.
“Major airports such as Kuching and Miri are currently operating beyond capacity, while several airports and STOLports require upgrading and modernisation.
“These challenges highlight the importance of coordinated planning, strategic investment and strong collaboration among relevant agencies and stakeholders to strengthen Sarawak’s transport system,” he added.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Transport (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil and Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep. — DayakDaily
